Chapter 12
NONLOCALITY
In the previous chapter, we have demonstrated the Kochen–Specker theorem, according to which any admissible hidden-variables theory (reproducing the predictions of quantum mechanics) must be contextual. The present chapter is devoted to a second, more famous theorem, namely, Bell’s theorem, according to which any admissible hidden-variables theory must be nonlocal. This issue—in a book devoted to hidden variables—is inescapable. However, to do justice to it, this chapter has to be fairly lenghy, and I am afraid this could distract the reader. A possible reading strategy is then to skip this chapter (or to skim it quickly) and, because it nevertheless contains significant material, to return to it later. The reader who chooses this strategy can do so without loss of continuity by keeping in mind (1) the content of Bell’s theorem and (2) that Bohm’s pilot wave is indeed nonlocal. This is the strategy I recommend because it allows one, in a first reading, to avoid losing contact with the essential story I have in mind in writing this book. This chapter is certainly compulsory but, I believe, it cannot be made easy reading. So, if you do not feel motivated enough, just jump to the next chapter. If you are motivated (not too much but still significantly enough), you may try to pick up everything you can. This statement is valid for PEDESTRIANS (~~~~) too, although many parts of this chapter are actually quite readable by them. Furthermore, to avoid the most technical issues, there is a subsection devoted to these PEDESTRIANS (~~~~).
